The Green Team is pleased to announce that every Friday is a Waste Free Lunch Day. Pack lunches and drinks using re-usable containers, pack whole fruits without packaging, and bulk snacks in reusable containers. Save the date for the Ben Franklin’s biggest fundraiser of the year. We are looking forward to our best Jog-a-Thon ever this year! Help us continue to provide additional art and science in the classroom, a variety of assemblies, drama and choir, Kid’s First News, library books, additional supplies for your child’s classroom and the many other programs that supplement and enhance our children’s education and build a family atmosphere at our school. There will be more information in the coming weeks about this year's Jog-a-Thon, but please put the date on your calendar now!

Way to go Christa Hoskins for winning the eleven year old intermediate class and the All-Round Title at the Washington State Rec-Opt Gymnastics Championships this past weekend. Christa placed 1st on the balance beam, floor exercise and vault. She came in 2nd on the uneven parallel bars. Awesome Christa!

Thank You
Our student leadership team participated in an after-school field trip to Hope Link. Students and families contributed almost $900. in cash and 14 boxes of canned food They delivered the goods and helped stack the food. We have a very generous community. The following students participated in the field trip: Tess Pate, Rachel Imhof, Ashley McGee, Samantha Ruskell, Christa Hoskins, Sonia Ionescu, and John Jacobson.

Great Work
Our 4th grade math team won 1st place at the Math is Cool master’s competition in Spokane. The winning team members were Abhi Sivaprasad, Irina Tolkova, Jonah Joughin, and Monisha Weerasundara. This is a huge accomplishment, since they were competing against the highest 4th grade math teams in the state.

Yearbooks
A few folks have asked if they can still purchase yearbooks and the answer is yes. However, there is a limited supply. There will be two PTA folks selling yearbooks at morning recess and lunch recess on Monday, June 16th and Tuesday, June 17th. Again, once they are sold, that’s it.

Don’t be caught on the water this summer without your Boater Education Kirkland Jr High PTSA has arranged the US Coast Guard Auxiliary to teach “About boating safely” class. Open to young people 12-20 yrs.
The State of Washington has a new mandatory boater safety education law. This law means that, eventually, all people operating a recreational boat or personal watercraft (jet ski) will have to take a boating safety class. This law will be phased in by age groups. The first group, 12 to 20 years, has to have their boater education card in their possession now, if they want to operate a boat or PWC. (personal water craft)

The US Coast Guard Auxiliary will be presenting an 8 hour boating safety class (About Boating Safely) which meets the requirements of this law. The class will be held on Wednesdays, June 4 and 11, 4 hours each day starting at 1:30pm.

Have your teen prepared for a safe summer of water skiing, wake boarding, fishing, and all of the boating activities.

Parent Input Forms

If you would like to give input on your child’s placement for next year, forms will be available in the office beginning Thursday. You may stop by to pick one up if you would like. The forms are due back by May 22nd. We will also have them available during Open House.
Open House/Science Fair

Our Open House and Science Fair is scheduled on Thursday, May 15th. Both events will begin at 6:30 and go until 8:00 p.m. This is a fun event where our students show off the work they have done all year long. Also, our library will have a Book Sale for one night only! If you can volunteer to help, please let Ms. McElfish know. I look forward to seeing you tonight!

Lost & Found

I can not believe how many jackets, coats and sweat shirts we have in our Lost and Found. The articles of clothing are of great quality and I am sure are expensive. If you are missing something, please come by and take a peek either during Open House or on Friday.

Our chess club members, Daniel and Samuel He won the co-championship of 3rd graders at the 2008 Washington State Elementary Chess Tournament that took place in Kirkland. Albert Li, also from Franklin won the co-championship for 1st graders.

Volunteer Tea

In a few days, you will be receiving an invitation from your child’s teacher inviting you to attend our Volunteer Tea. Parents that helped in the classroom, library, supervised field trips, worked at the Book Fair, playground, health room, monitored runners, helped in PE, and the list goes on and on……..are invited to attend, Thursday, June 5th at 9:15 a.m. in our Commons. I hope you will be able to attend. We would not be the great school we are without all the parents who give of their time, skills and leadership.

PE News

Rose Hill Junior High School is sponsoring a Super Feeder Track Meet on Thursday, May 29th at 4:00 p.m. Events are open to all students from Ben Franklin, Ben Rush, Mark Twain and Rose Hill Elementary schools. Events will include: 100M, 200M, 400M, 800M and 1600M runs, the long jump, high jump and a 4 X100 relay. Award certificates will be given for 1st – 5th place in each event. Ms. Denney plans to be there to support all Ben Franklin participants. Please return confirmation forms if you child plans to attend.
The Basics of Bicycling Skills and Safety unit returns to Franklin May 23rd – June 13th. Volunteers are still needed for Field Day equipment staging on June 5th at 3:30 p.m. and for face painting on June 6th starting at 9:15 a.m. Please contact Ms. Denney if you can help.

Hopelink End Summer Hunger Programs

Hopelink provides food for local families who need assistance. It depends on donations (food or financial) from community members.

End Summer Hunger Campaign Coin Drive is May 5-May 9th.
It’s time to clean out your coin jar (or remind your child to clean out their’s) and see if we can help our local Hopelink Food Bank with their summer needs.

Field Day is Coming June 6th

Field Day is just around the corner on Friday June 6th. We would love your help!

On June 6th in the morning (9:15 – 11:15) 70+ activity stations will be held for grades K – 6. Stations will be lead by students from 5/6 classes (Frank, Warner, Berten) and parent volunteers. In the afternoon the three classes of 5/6 students will have a game orientated field day from 1:30 – 3:30.

Parent volunteers are needed to lead morning stations, lead afternoon games, take digital photos and serve snacks. Please email Ms. Denney or fill out and return the volunteer form. Volunteers will receive an email and hard copy confirmation with your exact assignment the week of May 27th.

Kirkland Boys and Girls Club is offering Youth Tackle Football for kids 7-14 years. 7 year olds must way 60 lbs by the first practice (Aug 11) and 15 year olds must weigh no more than 120 lbs and be born no earlier than August 1st 1993. Open Registration ends July 1, 2008.

Does your youngster listen actively when you read aloud? It’s a key to understanding what is happening in the story. Try these simple tips to building listening skills:

1) Ask your child to retell small parts of the story to you. Or ask them questions while you read. Examples: “What will happen next?” “Why do you think she did that?” Find the answers to the questions together.

2) After you have read a story together two or three times, skip a word or two. Ask your child to fill in the missing word or words. This one works really well with rhyming stories.

On April 19th several families and a few teachers helped clean-up Bridle Trails State Park as part of a massive effort to make our city, parks and schools cleaner. I would like to thank Jennifer Lesourd, Sidney Olson, Stephanie Fulton, David, Nathan and Alex Follette, Shelley, Tony and Kate Kloba, Melissa and Emily Worland, Karen and Bailey Bennett, Rena, Grant, Rianne, Alec and Gilbert Peterson, Kate Berten and Kristin Wobker for taking time out of their busy weekend to help our community. The park Ranger from Bridle Trails Park Foundation and Ranger Mary commented on our school’s excellent citizenship through modeling and leadership. It was a miserable day with rain, sleet, and hail, but they managed to fill a 50 cubic yard dumpster. Way to go!

On Wednesday, May 7th, Kim Fricke, the incoming Principal for our school, will be spending the day at Ben Franklin. In the evening, our PTA will host a small welcoming reception for her in our library from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. This reception will be for parents only and students will meet her during the school day.

EAGER EAGLE: Saying “See you later…”

As you know, I do not like to say good bye, but I wanted to give you my latest staffing news. Dave Condon and Carrie Webster will retire at the end of this school year. Between the two, they have dedicated over 55 years of teaching service which is amazing!

Kathy Sanchez’s husband John has accepted a job in Albuquerque and the family will be moving at the end of school.

Jamie Warner and Jennifer Maxfield will join me at the new school, currently known as Site 52.

Additionally, Julie Lemme will leave her I.A. position and begin her student teaching. Hopefully, someday she will return to Franklin after she completes her Certification.

Kathy has been at Franklin for eight years and both Jennifer and Jamie started as student teachers and then became part of our staff two years ago. Julie has been at Franklin for three years. All have a special place in our Franklin family.

Kim Fricke, from California, has been hired as our new Principal for Ben Franklin. She will take over the helm in July, but will be here, on and off in May and June. Her school in California is out June 7th. She did her student teaching here about eight years ago with Kelly Pease in Special Education. She has had a variety of administrative experiences in elementary and secondary schools. She has taught 4th grade and 4/5 multi-age. She attended the Columbia Teacher’s College in New York, where several of our teachers attended a few years ago and has been a literacy coach.

EAGER EAGLE: Public Awareness Meeting for Level II Offender

Public Awareness Meeting

A meeting will be hosted and sponsored by the Kirkland Police Department on Thursday, April 17 at 7:00 p.m. at Rose Hill Elementary to discuss the recent relocation of a level II sex offender to the area. Community members are invited to attend and learn about safety concerns and precautions. Kirkland Police Sergeant John Haslip will facilitate the meeting. Sergeant Haslip and several other members of the Kirkland Police Department will be present to answer your questions. You can also obtain additional information by calling 425.587.3502.

Level II sex offenders are those who are considered a moderate risk to re-offend. For information about the classification levels of sex offenders, go to the King County Sherriff’s office web site: http://www.metroke.gov/sheriff. Another page on that web site is: http://www.metroke.gov/sheriff/prevention/child_safety. This site has excellent tips on child safety. The school staff has been informed of this sex offender. They will review general, age-appropriate, personal safety rules with all students. We suggest that you discuss these at home as well.

Our fourth grade math club, under the leadership of Mayellen Henry, participated in the ‘Math is Cool’ competition on March 28th. There were 20 team members, and all their effort and work paid off because they won 3rd place in the contest! Congratulations and keep up the great work!

Evan-Moor, the Educational Publisher puts out a book to connect school and home over the summer. The book has 160 full pages at $12.99 each. The activities include short, focused practice in basic skills with the intention of doing two pages a day for five days a week. The 2^nd annual Nike 5K and 1 Mile Go Run for Kids will be held in downtown Seattle on Saturday May 10^th. We are hoping for a large Ben Franklin contingent this year. If you are planning to do this event please email me so I know to look for you and your children at the event. I will be turning in registrations returned to school on April 28^th at Niketown in Seattle. Look for more information on the official entry form sent home or your can sign up and check it out online at www.nike5kfor.kids.com Please email me (Ndenney@lwsd.org) if you would like me to pick up your race packet and run number on May 7^th. I will distribute these at school on Thursday May 8^th.

Bike to school month will be held during May in conjunction with Cascade Bicycle Club’s bike to school and work month. Information and sign up flyers went home in the weekly school packets on April 16 – 17^th. Students in grades Kindergarten – 3^rd grade may only ride their bike to school if accompanied by a parent. They may however participate by doing bike commutes from home and with their family. Look for detailed information in the flyer. Students returning the RSVP form will receive a Bike to School Passport to record their commute trips. Last year our school placed second of all participating schools in their bike commute trips. The school with the highest commute total wins a BMX stunt bike show for their school sponsored by Cascade Bicycle Club. We will have a special Bike to School Day on Wednesday May 21^st.

Unicycling beginning Session III starts on April 22^nd runs thru June 5^th. The class is open to all 3^rd through 6^th grade students. Five of the twenty spots are already filled. Application forms are being passed out in PE class and are available on the hallway bulletin board by the gym.

GOLDEN ACORN AWARD
Each year our PTA gives the Golden Acorn Award to someone who has given exemplary service to children in our school community. The Golden Acorn Award is very special and is reserved for those committed to continuing and dedicated service. The first Golden Acorn Award was presented in 1937, and is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a PTA volunteer. The Golden Acorn Award may be won only once, and can be awarded to any PTA member of our school.

We would like to acknowledge some past recipients of this prestigious award. They have gone the extra mile to enrich the lives of children:

All Golden Acorn recipients receive an acorn pin and a donation is made in their name to the Washington State PTA Financial Grant Foundation. This Foundation is able to grant over $50,000 in annual grants to freshman students entering post-secondary education. The names of Ben Franklin winners are also added to a plaque that hangs in our school office.

In addition, Ben Franklin Elementary gives Golden Eagle Awards to those who have given of themselves to Franklin activities during the year. A person may be honored with numerous Golden Eagle Awards throughout their volunteer time here. Golden Eagles are categorized the following way:

This person has been valuable to Ben Franklin PTA in a variety of ways. They are always there to help with various projects and provide support on all levels. They may not be a committee chairperson, but our PTA could not survive without their help and enthusiasm.

Bike to School Month, May 2008

Dear Ben Franklin families,

May is Bike to School Month, designed to encourage bicycle commuting and mentor new riders. When you cycle to school with your child you:

Create daily exercise habits that help keep your child active and healthy.
Reduce car traffic and air pollution.
Help your child become a competent and independent cyclist.

We envision Bike to School Month as a family project, one that will also introduce parents to the fun of cycling with their kids.

Everyone who rides at least once wins a prize!

· All participants earn a reflective “slap bracelet”.

· 7-14 trips earn a reflective spoke slider.

· 15+ trips earn a cool bike bell.

School challenge: the elementary school that makes the most total trips will win a bike stunt show for their school and an article featuring their Bike-to-School team in the Cascade Courier.

So, how do you participate? It's easy! Fill out the form and return to your child's teacher or to the office by Friday, April 25th. We will send home bicycle safety information, “passport” and instructions. You keep track of your trips each day you ride* and turn in your passport at the end of the month. We'll add your trips to our school total and deliver your prizes.

*Because some children cannot cycle safely to school, and because the "work" that kids do also includes sports, music lessons, trips to the library, etc., commuter trips for Bike to School 2008 will include any trip made by bicycle somewhere your child needs to go, one round-trip per day.

Ben Franklin's Green Team & Bridle Trails Join Forces for Earth Day

Ben Franklin's Green Team will be working with the Bridle Trails State Park Foundation for Earth Day. Come help care for the Bridle Trails State Park.

Where: Bridle Trails State Park (main entrance) off 116th Ave NE
Why: To join other community volunteers to help protect the park.

Morning snacks will be provided. Free parking is available. Bring work gloves, long pants, tennis shoes, long sleeved sheets (removing blackberries), and dress for the weather.

Classes are for EVERYONE -Boys and Girls Kindergarten thru 6th grade and will be run by Matthew Skurnik and Matthew Booty)

Members of Hot Dog USA, a World Champion Jump Rope team, will be teaching a Jump Rope class. Hot Dog USA has traveled all around the world performing and teaching Jump Rope skills to thousands of students and adults. They have been featured on over 30 different television shows such as Bill Nye the Science guy, Good Morning America, and ESPN. They have led hundreds of Jump Rope workshops and have performed at various events such as professional basketball halftime games, company picnics and school assemblies.

During these fun-filled classes the children will learn a variety of Jump Rope skills catered to their skill level. Emphasis will be based on learning new Jump Rope skills, finding fun ways to stay healthy through exercise, making friends and having fun! The Children will learn skills such as single rope, partner skills, double dutch and long rope. They will play Jump Rope games and learn performance technique through sharing jump rope skills to the class.

US National and World Champions are coming to Lake Washington High School Gym Saturday, April 12th. The doors open at 6pm, with the performance starting at 6:30. No charge, although donations are gladly accepted.

Ben Franklin team forming for 2nd NIKE 5K for Kids

The 2nd Annual NIKE 5K for Kids is on Saturday, May 10th at 8am at Niketown, Seattle. Come join the Ben Franklin team, coordinated by Nancy Denney! Choose between the 5K (3.1mk) run/walk or the 1 mi run/walk. Family and friends are encouraged to run together.

The cost is $20 per person - $15 for registration and $5 for tshirt fee.

Student Leadership

Last Thursday, March 20th, eleven leadership students stayed after school and picked up garbage for almost two hours. That’s the good news; the bad news is that each one collected nearly a full bag of trash! The leadership participants, under the direction of Mr. Howden, were: Kloe Roberts, Amanda Levine, Alka Pai, Rachel Imhof, Ashley McGee, Riley Stockard, Michaela Busenbark, Mia Juric, Christa Hoskins, John Jacobson and Chloe O’Neil. Thank you for your effort and pride in our school.

Children’s Literature

Mrs. McElfish will be the instructor for “Child Literature: Choose, Read, Reflect”, a class for elementary age students AND their parents. The class will be taught at Franklin on Tuesday afternoons from 4:30-5:30 PM beginning April 15th. It will be a great class for parents to learn read aloud techniques and connect with literacy in the home. You may register for the class at marion.holland@lwtc.edu

Lost and Found

Sad News

I am very sad to report that Kathy Sanchez will be leaving our Ben Franklin family. Kathy’s husband, John, accepted a job in Albuquerque, so they will be moving to New Mexico. Kathy and Bethany will stay until school is out in June. Many of you may recall that Kathy and John’s families live in Albuquerque so they will once again reunite. Kathy dropped in my lap about eight years ago when she moved to Washington from New Mexico and has been here ever since. I personally will miss her energy, dedication to children and her own learning, and being a part of the Franklin family.

Congratulations

On February 15, The Book Wizards; Monica Devaraju, Stella Perlic, Mallika Iyer, and Elena Plenefisch won the District Championship for the Battle of the Books 2008. The girls are 6^th graders from Mr. Frank’s class. The participants came from 4^th – 6^th grades and they read a mix of Sasquatch and Young Reader’s Choice Award books chosen by district librarians. After winning the right to represent Franklin in the district Battle by defeating eleven other teams, the final competitions lasted a week with a round robin format. This year’s team mastered the contents of twelve books for the final questions which popped up on Instant Messaging and started with the phrase: “In what book….”

Report Cards/Conferences

March 17^th and 18^th are half days for students; parents may request a parent/teacher conference during that time if needed. Dismissal for half-day is noon and conferences will be scheduled after that time.

Please talk with your child’s teacher to schedule a conference.

Report cards will go home with students on Friday, March 14^th.

We had 47 boys and girls register for kindergarten last Thursday! Thank you for helping to get the word out. As people move into your neighborhood and you welcome them, be sure to encourage registering their child now for school.

Lost and Found

Once again our lost and found is overflowing. If your child is missing a coat or other clothing items please check the lost and found. We will donate all lost and found items during the spring break.

PE News

Spring physical fitness assessments will be held March 19th – 25th in 3^rd – 6^th grades. Parent volunteers are needed to supervise and encourage students at each station. The traveling gymnastic apparatus unit will be at Franklin March 27^th – April 18^th. Students are encouraged to wear clothing that allows for flexibility for those 3 weeks. We would love volunteer spotting help in all PE classes, K – 6, during that time. Please email Ms. Denney if you can help out with either event even if it’s only for one class period. The 2^nd annual Nike 5K for Kids will be held in downtown Seattle on Saturday, May 10^th. We are hoping for a large Ben Franklin contingent this year. Did you know $15 of the $20 registration fee comes back to the Franklin PE program? Last year NIKE donated $326 to our school. Look for more information and official entry forms to come home soon or you can sign up and check it out online at www.nike5kforkids.com.

The earned pledge prizes for Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart arrived at school and were distributed this week. Our final fund raising total was $3007.67. Thank you Ben Franklin Community for helping to fight heart disease and stroke!

Parent's Night Out at Kirkland Boys & Girls Club

The Kirkland Boys and Girls Club is hosting a Parents Night Out March 21, 2008 from 7:30pm to 10am. The cost is $30 per child, which includes dinner and breakfast.

Sign up for Rachel Muller's Art Program - starts 3/24

Rachel Muller is back with a new, 10-week session of her wonderful art enrichment program. Students will learn about Renaissance art by creating their own paintings and sculptures.

Classes start March 24th and continue for 10 sessions after school on Mondays from 3:40-4:40. $158 covers the cost of the class and materials for 10 weeks. Siblings receive a 50% discount on tuition. Financial aid is available.
